first lunch in GluttonLand
January 24, 2009I woke up at noon from the smell of curry. I missed breakfast. Oh well, no worries. Early lunch then.
The table was laden with 4 dishes. Kari Kapitan. Meat in black vinegar gravy. Chinese sausages. Ju Hu Char. I decided to have nasi separuh.
I grabbed a piece of raw lettuce, with a spoonful of Ju Hu Char positioned in the centre, I delicately placed a pinch of sambal belacan on top. I wrapped the lettuce around it, forming a ball. Quite a big piece, it’s gonna be jaw-dropping.
A drop of water trickled down my arm from the freshly-washed lettuce. The cut on my thumb stung a bit. I brushed off the minor discomfort as I shifted my mind to the light-green bundle on my fingers. I pushed the wrapped Ju Hu Char into my wide-opened mouth. Aaaahhhh… Too big. Coulnd’t fit.
So I took my first bite, very carefully as I tried not to spill. The lettuce made a crunchy sound as juices flowed. I could taste the distinctive sweetness of the fried sengkuang. I bit into some sambal. For a moment there, my tongue tembled a little from the spiciness. Immediately, I was tearing. I continued biting and soon, I was snorting. I rubbed off snort with my sleeve. It’s ok. No one was watching.
It took awhile before the spiciness joined the sweetness and the two danced in unison around my taste buds. WIth chopped mushrooms, thinly-stripped sotong, carrots and sengkuang (at least, these are all that I know what my mom put in) mixed together with the luttuce and sambal belacan, everything complemented each other as I quickly chew them all and swallow.
I drank my Shandy. I silently toasted to myself. I’m home.
Welcome to GluttonLand.
